POINTS OF VIEW

TE MAWHAI ROAD. Sir.—The Waipa County Council’s discussion reported in your issue of Friday, 29th April, on the above question was most disappointing. As mover of the resolution referred to I was astounded to see the Council placing its responsibility at the door of the Minister of Transport. The Council’s decision to write to Mi Semple about the speed of motor vehicles on this road comes close to a slant on the efficiency of the traffic inspector of this district, who to my mind will measure up very favourably with councillors as far ns doing his job is concerned. It is interesting to note that the dangerous bends and one-way bridges complained of were not reported as discussed. Most of these bends were surveyed many moons ago, 1 take it, for future reference. No wonder the ratepayers of Te Mawhai have nominated a candidate for the Kakepuku riding. I understand it was at a meeting of the local branch of the National Party that it was first decided to nominate Mr W. J. D. Melville. However, as a change is needed, I feel sure he will receive support of all political shades; nevertheless, he should be in good company when elected. —I am, etc., F. PRICE. Te Mawhai, 3rd MayA LETTER OF THANKS. . (TO THE EDITOR.) Sir, —I think I am voicing the feeling of my fellow farmers in saying how much we appreciated the remarks made in your last issue by the local officer of the Stock Department in regard to the permanent effects of eczema in our dairy stock. I think there has been a doubtful feeling in our minds as to whether or not cows affected will regain their usual state of health for next season. Mr-Mel-rose is well acquainted with what happened in Taranaki in the 1935 outbreak and the way in which they recovered and got back to normal. The thanks of all or due to him (and also Mr I. L. Johnson), for their timely remarks at a time of considerable trouble and anxiety.—l am, etc., GEORGE HALL. Hairini, May 2nd.
