CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL

OVERCROWDED CLASSROOMS. POSITION AT OTOROHANGA. (Our Resident Reporter.) Application has been made by the Auckland Board of Education to the Education Department for a grant for the erection of three further classrooms and an art room at the Otorohanga consolidated school. In the meantime the present cookery room, woodwork room, and laboratory are being used as class-rooms, and the children of forms I, 11, 111, and IV, are being sent each week to the Te Kuiti District High School for manual instruction. MORE RECREATION GROUND. The school attendance at Otorohanga now stands at 601—430 in the primary and 71 in the secondary classes. Since the consolidation of this school the roll number has been doubled, and the large area covered by the present extensive buildings has cramped the playing fields, and it is impossible to ensure that every child has the facilities for play, and recreation that is desirable. The Otorohanga School Committee is now endeavouring to open up negotiations with adjacent property owners with a view to increasing the playing areas. The inspectors’ reports show that a high standard of efficiency is reached and that the tone and conduct of the school are excellent. GOOD RESULTS ACHIEVED. In the secondary department two of the three candidates for the university entrance examination were successful One candidate for the Training College entrance was successful. Five lads passed the public entrance examination, one candidate securing the highest marks in the King Country. During the present year five ex-pu-pils of this school entered the teaching profession from the Training College. This institution of learning is steadily growing in importance, and the demands on the Board of Education and the Department are of necessity numerous and frequent and are. likely to continue to be so.
