REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY

NORDON CUP CHALLENGE. WANGANUI DEFEATS WAIPA. A Wanganui observer writes: The Wanganui Hockey Association retained the Nordon Cup on Saturday after a fast and exciting game played against Waipa on the Gonville Domain. The home side won by three goals to two, and this was the third occasion during the current season that Wanganui has successfully defended the trophy. Waipa made the pace early in the game and for a time the visitors kept play in Wanganui territory. Toward the end of the first spell, however, the heme forwards gained an advantage over their opponents and at halftime the score was 2—l in Wanganui’s favour. The second spell was fairly even, and both goal-keepers were frequently called upon to save hard and difficult shots. Wanganui had a slight advantage, however, and after a spectacular exhibition A. Ranson secured the third and winning goal. Several concerted efforts were made by the Waipa pack to again penetrate the Wanganui defence, but except for one occasion, when A. Spiers gcaled after a smart piece of work, they were not successful. Features of the game were fast play and good combination. L. Stewart' (Wanganui) was the outstanding forward player on the field, and B. Spiers, centre-forward for Waipa, was also prominent. A. Howatson and B. Mclntyre goaled for Wanganui in the first spell, and before the interval B. Spiers won a penalty bully against M'clntyVe. The visiting team was well balanced throughout the game and showed plenty of vigour.
