THOROUGHBRED SALE
LARGE CROWD; LITTLE COMPETITION. ONLY TWO HORSES SOLD. The dispersal sale of thoroughbreds owned by Mr L. Hodgson took place on Thursday afternoon at Mr J. H. Mcßae’s training stables, Kihikihi Road, with Mr G. W. Vercoe in the rostrum. There was a very representative attendance of sportsmen, including several from a distance, but as 'he sale progressed it was evident that most of them were merely present as spectators. Valpai, the ten-year-old gelding by Valkyrian-Wahinepai, and winner of £1250 in stake money, was passed in when bidding ceased at 25 gns, the vender intimating a reserve of 150 gns. A two-year-old gelding by Captain Cobham-Quin Abbey mare, was quitted at 30 gns to Mr A. L. Bayliss, of Auckland. The nine-year-old gelding Illur.iinagh (by Illumination from Erinagh), winner of over £5OO this season, was not in demand, and when bidding reached 18 gns he was knocked down to Messrs Stapleton Bros., of Te Awn. mutu. The Valkyrian - Delpeen gelding. Delrain, aged 8 years, winner of £14(10, was passed in at 30 gns., but was subsequently sold at that figure to Mr J. R. McMurray, of Gore, South Island. A four-year-old gelding by HyllusSt. Crispin mare, for whom the vendor asked 230 gns, could only attract a top bid of 18 gns. All eyas were on Prince Rangi, when th? three-year-old son of Act-.' and Etehi Rangi, jvas paraded, and an opening bid of 200 gns was received, hut not improved upon, and the auctioneer sent him back to his box, announcing that Mr Hodgson had a reserve of 1500 gns on the gelding. Then the eight-year-old gelding Tuaheahe (Lipidary-Lilybank) was offered on behalf of Mr S. C. Macky, and bids started at 15 gns and, went up to 30 gns, at which he was passed
in, having a reserve of 100 gns. Mr E. H. Cucksey offered his eight-year-old gelding Baroscope (Weathervane - Tortrix), but he was passed in when bidding stopped at 37 gns, it being announced that 50 gns was the minimum price acceptable.
