RAGWORT CONTROL
IN WAIPA COUNTY. INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT. Reporting at to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council, the noxious weeds inspector, Mr G. M. Wall, stated that considerable time has been spent in arranging matters for the coming season with the object of commencing operations in August. A conference with the Minister of Agriculture, at Hamilton, had been attended, with representatives of fifteen other county councils. It was unanimously urged that Waipa’s policy should be pursued on an intensified scale. “The principal district inspector of the Department of Agriculture has conferred with Waipa County officials, and, while nothing absolutely definite is to hand, it seems certain that we shall be in a better position to handle the problem of ragwort control than ever before.”
Mr Wall added that 26 tons of sodium chlorate is on order and a further 48 tons of lime taken into stock. The sodium chlorate borrowed from the Agricultural Department has been returned.
“The one gang retained throughout the winter months has been in steady demand on private properties, and have used 15 tons 13 cwt of sodiumlime mixture, all supplied from the county depot,” concluded the report. The chairman commenting on the conference, said he was of opinion that the Department would co-opera<,e more fully with the County Council this season, and perhaps make funds available for procuring sodium for use on properties whose owners could not afford to buy it. Details had, however, not yet been finalised.
