The Waipa County Council to-day approved a motion that the lease of a reserve at Pirongia West to Messrs Grace Bros., at £7 per annum, bo granted. Reporting to the Waipa County Council to-day the engineer (Mr J. W. Civil) said he has eight men working full time on No. 13 scheme and sixteen men on No. 5 scheme. An epidemic of chicken-pox has been affecting numbers of children in various parts of the district, but the malady is not in a severe form, and a few days of special treatment sees the children restored to normal health again.

At the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Women’s Division, to be held next Thursday afternoon, a report of the principal business dealt with at the Dominion conference last week will be given by the delegates. ,

The New Zealand Counties’ Association asked the Waipa County Council to-day for details of Crown and Native Lands in the county—area, location, valuation (capital and unimproved) —and the Council referred the matter to the clerk.

Jersey cattle breeders should note a special proviso in connection with accepting entries for the Te Awamutu Jersey Club’s annual pedigree bull sale on Wednesday, 29th September. All entries must be submitted on extended pedigree forms, and must bear a certificate from the owner as to correctness.

The vigorous ringing of the firebell at a few minutes to 8 o’clock this morning sent the fire brigade to quench an outbreak of fire in the wash-house of Mr H. C. Rainey’s residence, Young Street. Some damage had been done to the building and its contents before the outbreak was extinguished.

Mr J. W. Civil told the Waipa County Council to-day that he had inspected the proposed detour of Allcock’s Road, Te Rore district, the old detour track on Mr Allcock’s side of the legalised road could only be improved upon for the crossing of stock To form a proper road across the gully would cost several hundred pounds.

The damage done to a County road by single-tyred motor buses conveying school children to and from school was referred to by the engineer nt to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council. The road referred to was that known as Hawthorne’s (in the Mangapiko Riding) which has lately been resanded. Mr Civil said if the re-sanded portion had been allowed to set before the traffic used it the trouble would have been averted.

The social and dance at the Kakepuku Hall last Saturday evening proved very successful and achieved its objective, which was to augment the funds of the Hall Committee to enable the supper room to be completely lined, and thus make the place much more comfortable. There was a good muster of dancers, for whom Mr F. Beet (Pirongia) provided tip-top ihusic. Mr R. Jones carried out the duties of M.C. Non-dancers enjoyed cards in the ante-room, warmed by a bright and cheery fire.

Reporting on the legalised but unformed road running through Messrs Ranby’s properties at Ohaupo from the Great South Road to the east end of Ranby’s Road, about 85 chains, the engineer told to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council that approximately 65 chains from the Great South Road end to where it intersects Mr R. S. Ranby’s and Mr Frank O’Connor’s properties be closed and sold to Mr J. Ranby, senior. The Councii decided to seek fuller information, and inform Mr Ranby of its willingness to proceed with the closing of the road.

“More interference!” commented a councillor at to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council when the clerk read correspondence from the Hamilton branch of the General Labourers’ Union in connection with the payment to County workmen fortnightly instead of monthly, as has been the custom. The engineer said a majority of the workmen had indicated a preference for payment of wages monthly, several pointing out that to get their wages fortnightly they have to prepare and send in their timesheets fortnightly instead of monthly. However, the Council agreed to comply with the request. The engineer told to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council that he had not yet been able to prepare estimates of improving and sealing several Rangiahoia Riding roads. Cr. Hall said he desired to have application made by the Council to the Government for a subsidy towards the cost of the sealed roads. The engineer said the Public Works Department would want plans and specifications before considering the request. He could prepare a tentative estimate for next meeting. Cr. Hall said he would have to get the sanction of the ratepayers in the Riding by poll, but wanted an estimate before seeking that authority.
