STUD SHEEP FOR EXPORT

KEEN OVERSEAS DEMAND. The export trade in stud sheep with South America and Austral’a seems likely to reach record dimensions this year. Only six weeks ago Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co. Ltd. made a shipment to Chile of 56 stud sheep comprising .Corriedales and Romneys and they now advise that they forwarded last week a very extensive shipment of stud sheep totalling 126 hSad. As with the last shipment, the majority of the sheep that have been selected for shipment to Uruguay, Argentina, Patagonia and Chile comprise Corriedales. In addition, howevelr, there is a number of Romney, Lincoln and Merino rams. Nine of the Gorriedale stud Hams and fifteen of the, stud ewes came from the noted Hui Hui stud of the Estate H. T. Little, Hawarden. These are mostly descended from the Royal Champion ram, Ds2—he won that honour in 1931—and DIO who was the Royal Champion in 1928. Of the twenty-five Corriedales selected from the noted Bushey Park stud of the Estate J. A. Johnstone, Palmerston South, two are outstanding fourtooth prize winning rams, thirteen are ram hoggets and there are also ten ewe hoggets. The Rakahuri flock of Mr Hugh Ensor, Rangiora, has also been largely drawn upon and from this stud one outstanding four-tootl: ram and ten ram hoggets have been selected, while two orders for ewe hoggets have also been fulfilled from this stud making a total of thirtyfive:. An outstanding ram hogget has been selected from Mr Win. Anderson’s well-known Amuri stud at Wniau. In addition to the Corriedales, there are two outstanding fourtooth Merino stud rams bred in the well-known Wara.tah stud of the late F. H. Smith, Albury,. South Canterbury. Rams from this old established Merino stud are proving popular in South America and quite a number of repeat orders have been received for them. The nine Romney ram hoggets included in the shipment comprise five from the wellknown Alloa flock of Mr Q. Donald, Featherston, and from Miss Bessie Donald’s Papatahi stud, Featherston. These are of pure Waiorongomai blood. The shipment is completed with an outstanding collection of Lincoln rams, ten of which, all one-shear, were bred by Mr G. V. Smith in his noted Waitaria stud at Gisborne. Mi’ E. T. Wilton, of Rang’itumau, has also supplied foui outstanding four-tooth rams and three ram hoggets, making a total shipment of 126 head and comprising one of the most valuable consignments of stud sheep to be sent forward to South America since the boom years. The sheep were all assembled at Lyttelton and many wellknown judges and breeders who inspected them before they were loaded expressed the opinion that they were: a particularly well selected lot of stud sheep that should prove a very valuable advertisement for (he Dominion’s sheepbreeders in the various countries to which they are be ing shipped by Messrs Wright Steph, enson and Co. Litd. whose Stud Stock Department was responsible for the complete selection as well as the shipping arrangements. Quite a number of stud and flock sheep have been lately sent to vari-

ous parts of Australia, Many of these have been repeat orders as Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co. Ltd. who have been making the selections havei been advised of quite a number of outstamling successes which have been won at leading Royal Shows by sheep they have sent to Australia during the past few seasons. Three -tud Konmey ram. were recently shipped to South tralia, two of these being bred in the Meonstoke stud of Col, C. W. Wditon, Bell Block, ami one by Messrs Thompson Bros., Havelock, Marlborough. These were three typical Romney rams, low set, good headed sheep with plent'■ of depth and spring of rib and very evenly covered with gootl quality Konmey wool. An outstamling four tooth Corriedale stud ram was also selected and shipped recently from the Bushey Bark Estate to West Australia where the Corriedale breed is making rapid progress. A particular ly valuable stud Southdown ram was also forwarded last week to one of the lending New South Wales breeders. This ram was from the well-known flock of Mr James Knight and was purchased some con siderable lime back and held in reservo for this particular breeder. This ram, which was an outstanding type, was sired by the Royal Champion ram. In addition to the stud sheen mentioned, a shipment of forty Bolder Leicester (lock ranis was also made to a client in Victoria. These were bred in the well-known Outran! stud owned by the Estate .1. W. Blair, the Taieri. Other consignments are also pending’.
