OTOROHANGA NEWS

TOPICS OF THE HOUR. A HARDY EQUINE VETERAN. (Our Resident Representative.) The aged Otorohanga show jumper, “Two Step,” the property of Mrs Colin Mei'rin, was narrowly beaten on jumping points by another veteran of the show ring, “Toby,” the property of Mrs T, L. Ranstead, for the Dominion Jumping- Contest, in which there was a record field of competitors, at the Waikato Show la:<t week. The judge, Mr A. J. Eyres, of Dannevirke, stated that although the ground was treacherous the standard of jumping was particularly high, and “Two Step” was prominent in good company. For the past week the weather has been very unsettled, and a considerable quantity of rain has fallen, thoroughly saturating the ground and causing a prolific growth of the pastures. The rivers and streams are running high and there is a considerable amount of dead water along the river flats. During last month 3.72 inches of rain fell at Otorohanga on 17 days, and the general conditions were cold for October in the King Country. The bane of the gardener, the white butterfly, has again made its unwelcome! appearance in this territory, and the pest is apparently increasing daily in numbers despite the release of parasites by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research during the 1935-36 season. A largely attended Spinsters’ Dance was held in the Paewhenua Hall last Saturday evening, when there were many patrons from Otorohanga and adjoining settlements. The dance music, by Keighley’s Orchestra, was pleasing, whilst the generous supper arrangements left nothing to be desired. The standard of tennis among players of the various clubs of Otorohanga is universally good, and players are looking forward to many interesting matches as the season progresses.
