SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mrs T. McKay, of Tauranga, was a visitor to relatives in Te Awamutu and district during the week-end.

Mr H. Weal, of Te Rahu, leaves tomorrow for Hastings, where he will act as judge of the light horse section at the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Show.

Mrs W. J. North, of Te Awamutu, and Mrs W. G. Kay and Miss Mona Kay, of Korakonui, are away on a motoring trip that is to include visits to the National Park and Wanganui.

The engagement is announced of Miss Zoe Patricia Noonan, third daughter of Mr and Mrs R. S. Noonan, to William Joseph, only son of Mr and Mrs M. Glass, Ohakune Junction.

The engagement is announced of Eleanor Houston (Nora), younger daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Old, Fraser Street, Te Awamutu, to William Gordon, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs W. H. Rollitt, London, England.

The chairman referred, at to-day’s meeting of the Wiaipa County Council, to the reecnt death in North Auckland, of Colonel Allen Bell, a former member of the Waipa County Council, who had done splendid public service over a long term of years. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with the widow and family of deceased.

The death of Mr Hugh Gillies, at Hamilton a few days ago, at the age of 76 years, removes a man who was associated with Te Awamutu half a century ago, for soon after his arrival from County Tyrone, Ireland, in the ’eighties ot last century he settled in Te Awamutu, and it was from here that he joined the Railway Department, being stationed successively at Matumaoho, Piako, Te Kuiti and Otorohanga. In later years he lived quietly in Hamilton, where he took a practical interest in several organisations associated with the progress of town and district. He is survived by a widow and family of seven sons and three daughters, one of the latter being Mrs H. Carseldine, Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu.

The 60th anniversary of the membership of Mi- John McLeod, first grand master of New Zeaand and now district secretary, was celebrated by about 500 members of the Auckand District of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows in their city hall on Saturday night. Representatives of most of the 68 lodges of the district attended, including the grand master of New Zealand, Mr A. C. Blair, and the grand secretary, Mr A. G. Shrimpton. Gifts of a silver salver, a silver toa set and a cheque were made to Mr and Mrs McLeod from the 8500 members of the district. A car load of local Oddfellows made the journey from here on Saturday afternoon and returned last evening. They report a marvellous function on Saturday evening.
