TOPICS OF THE HOUR. MAORI CONCERT. (Our .Resident Representative.) Princess Te Puea, of Ngaruawahia, was a visitor to Otorohanga to attend the Maori concert in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. The concert drew a large attendance, and was greatly enjoyed by the members of both races present. The song of Te Iwiata, “ River, Don’t Come Near My Door,” was an outstanding item in the com» programme. Haka anj poi dances, solos, games, and choruses provided a pleasing and unique entertainment. PERSONAL. The Rev. H. W. Payne has accepted an invitation to remain as superintendent of the Otorohanga Methodist circuit for a further term of one year. Mr H. J. Osmond, of Otorohanga attended the farewell function at Auckland to the Hon. W. Nash, Minister of Finance. OBITUARY. The death occurred at Matamata last Monday of Mrs Young, wife of Mr Robert Young, a prominent pioneer settler of Otorohanga district some 30 years ago, in her seventysecond year. The deceased lady is survived by her husband and a grownup family. Mr Robert Young, of Otorohanga, is the eldest son, and Mr F. McPhee, of Rewa Rewa, is a brother. The late Mrs Young arrived in the Otorohanga district with her husband and family, from Taranaki, about 30 years ago, and they farmed here for many years prior to selling out and acquiring farming properties near Matamata, where Mrs Young had resided up till the time of her death. KIO KIO DANCE. A largely-attended dance was held in the Kio Kio Hall on Tuesday evening to celebrate the completed enlargement of the building. Congratulatory speeches were made by several prominent settlers. Solos were renoered by Miss Wlalters, and an excellent supper was served. WOMEN’S DIVISION. There was an unusually large attendance at the last monthly meeting of the Otorohanga branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, when a number of new members were enrolled. A flower show was featured, and Mrs F. O. R. Phillips acted as judge, making the following awards: Freesias: Mrs Buckland 1, Mrs Cleland 2. Other blooms: Mrs Horneman 1 and 2. In a pastry-making competition Mesdames Evans and Neshansen tied for first honours. Arrangements were completed for the sixth birthday of the branch to be held next month. Mrs Phillips delivered an interesting lecture on gardening, and. will give a trophy for competition among members for polyanthus and primrose growing. TENNIS UNION MEETING. The annual meeting of the combined tennis clubs of Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, and Hangatiki took place at Hangatiki, when the following delegates were present: Messrs Ward, Craig, and Cameron (Te Kuiti), Messrs Bulford, Cooper, and Williams (Otorohanga), and Mrs Oatridge, Miss Anderson, and Mr Oatridge (Hangatiki). Mr Cooper was .elected chairman, and Mrs L. Leigh was reelected secretary. Competitive games will begin on 31st instant. The bal-ance-sheet showed a sound financial position. AREATA CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Areata Club the election of officers resulted: President, Mr T. McCready; vice-presidents, Messrs Ingham, Meharry, and Hughes; secretary, Mr Williams; club captain, Mr Howell; executive, Mesdames Leigh and Cooper, Misses Taylor and Henderson, and Messrs Holmes, Larsen, Kehely, Buckman, and Gwilliam. The membership of this club is increasing steadily, and its financial position is satisfactory.
