SOLDIERS’ MORTGAGES

TE AWAMUTU R.S.A. ACTION. At a meeting of the Te Awamutu R.S.A. executive last evening the action of the deputation representing South Auckland branches in making representations to Cabinet Ministers in the matter of soldier settlers' mortgages was approved, and £2 was voted towards the expenses of the deputation. In reference to the position, the Minister of Finance wrote stating definitely that his interpretation of section 43, sub section 8 of the Mortgage Corporation Act was that Adjustment Commissions could remit arrears of rent and interest notwithstanding the fact that they, together with the mortgages, were less than basic value. He further stated that instructions would be given accordingly. In a similar connection, the Minister of Finance, in reply to a resolution from the Te Awamutu branch protesting against handing over the soldier settlers' mortgages to the State Advances Corporation, stated that a number of the staff at present handling the work are being transferred, and that there will be no break in continuity of administration. It was resolved that a deputation should wait on the Mayor with a request that he take steps toward the formation of a Te Awamutu branch of the Defence League. Several other matters were also discussed, and accounts passed for payment.
