SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

FOR THE MUNICIPAL BAND. The concert arranged principally by Mr L. W. Spence to assist the fund for sending the Te Awamutu Municipal Band to the contest at Whangarei at the end of next week attracted a large number of patrons to the Empire Theatre on Wednesday evening —in fact, it was a large audience, considering the number of counter attractions. Those responsible for the arrangements are to be congratulated upon the success achieved, for the public was very appreciative, and hearty applause followed each of the many items on a well varied programme. The Band provided a number of bright selections in front of the theatre earlier in the evening, and though one or two changes had to be made from the published programme, the substitutions in no way detracted from the general standard. The programme itself was a lengthy one, and the producer wisely limited encores to a minimum; as it was, the last item only concluded at 11 o’clock. The programme was as follows: Opening chorus, “Over My Shoulder,” by the company; vocal solo, “Stranger of Galilee,” Miss N. Old; medley ol march trunes, Harmonica Band; ballet, “Isn’t It a Lovely Day,” Miss Mclvor and pupils; sketches, “Up-to-date Salesmanship” and “The Wedding Anniversary,” Mrs W. McCready and Mr L. Spence; Highland Fling, little Valerie Richards; tenor solo, “My Dear,” Mr C. B. Linehan; operatic solo dance, “To a Rose,” little Elaine North; recitation, “Simple Simon,” Mrs T. L. Nicholson; soprano solo, "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,” Mrs Lindsay Young; campfire scena, by a group sitting round the campfire singing popular melodies, with Miss Z. Noonan and Messrs B. Galloway and R. Willis as vocal solo ists, Miss H. Hallett as accordeon soloist, and little Diane Rhodes as tap dance soloist; black and white ballet, Misses N. Morriss, F. Bridge, S. . Flutey, D. Wall and A. Deed. After the interval Miss F. North opened with a pianoforte selection, and then came a Dutch scena, with specialty dances by Elaine North and Diane Rhodes; tenor solo, “Little Boy Blue,” Mr C. B. Linehan; classic ballet, “The Seasons,” Miss Mclvor’s pupils; sketch, “The Ethel Mystery,” Miss A. Mairs and Messrs B. Galloway, G. Baxter and L. Spence; humorous duologue, Mr and Mrs T. Nicholson; ventriloquism, Mr E. Meyer and “Freddy," followed by a series of farmyard imitations; dance solo, Peggy Sager; sketch, “Hotel de Luxe,” Mrs Me Cready and Mr Spence; soprano solo, "I Don’t Care,” Mrs L. Young; seantriubhas dance, little Elaine North; humour, “Wedded Bliss,” Mr Bert Hey, followed by "Let's Be Miserable”; sketch, “The Doctor’s Advice,” Messrs Baxter, Spence and Galloway; medley of choruses, Campfire Boys and company, in which several vocal and instrumental solos were included. The stage effects throughout were exceptionally good. The accompanists for the evening were Misses P. North (who did the bulk of the work), Mrs T. Nicholson, and Messrs G. Rollitt and H. Hey. All concerned in the concert acquitted themselves well.
