GOD’S ABUNDANCE
CIVILISATION’S CAPACITY. “It has been fully demonstrated that the productive capacity of civilisation to-day is such that it could support a far greater population than at present but for the fortuitous hindrances that' men have imposed upon it,” says the Rev. Canon R. J. Campbell. “The supply is there, just at hand; we have only to make use it it. God has placed it within reach, just as He has spread the fields with verdure and garbed the trees in bloom: it is we who waste and ravage and destroy .... “Were we but intent to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, were this object given the first place in our desires and deeds, all else should be added unto us that we have need of in our brief earthly pilgrimage. “It is but a truism to say that no life is sufficient for' or by itself. The individual presumes the community, and is made by it, and in turn reacts upon it. What the quality of the common life is, that the individual life tends to become; what the individual is colours the whole. “You cannot cut yourself off from your fellows, do what you will. If the life that is going on all around you is a poor, sad kind of life, yours cannot be happy and prosperous. You cannot, simply cannot, pursue your own good, secure your own happiness, apart from that of your fellow-men, no matter how hard you try. And we have to remember that we can only influence the common life from our own individual centre.”
