A hindrance to amalgamation of counties, as suggested by the Government, was referred to at to-day’s meeting of the Waipa County Council, when a member mentioned that the Government at present limits its subsidy on rates paid to a maximum of £2500 in any one year. Several counties have such large rate revenue that they receive the maximum subsidy now, and amalgamation would mean a. loss of suosidy. The chairman said that position had been mentioned at the recent meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Counties Association, and negotiations with the Government were being continued.
