THE HOUSE SHORTAGE

HIGH SOUNDING SCHEMES. The Minister of Finance has announced that the Government intends to give effect to its monetary policy by the direct use of public credit for its housing scheme. This sounds very wonderful, but it apparently means nothing more than the money is to be borrowed from the Reserve Bank, During the next 12 months the sum of £3,500,000 is to be made available to the Ministry ot Housing for building purposes. We should like to know how many houses the Government considers are required, in order to have some idea of the total expenditure with which the country will be faced. The sum to be borrowed is greater than that advanced in any previous year, though in 1930 it amounted to £3,300,000. Mr J. A. Lee, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, is to be in complete charge of the expenditure, and he has issued a statement on the subject. Unfortunately this is one of the statements of the type in which the Labour Government excels. It is full of excellent sentiments, but gives no real information.—Taranaki Herald.
