RUGBY FOOTBALL

FINAL GAME OF LOCAL SEASON. DOYLE CUP WON BY WAIKERIA A. There was not a large attendance of spectators at Albert Park last Saturday afternoon when the final game of the Waipa Rugby Union's 1936 season was played. The teams were Waikeria A and Ngutunui, finalists in the competition for the Doyle Cup in the junior grade. Mr R. H. Annibal was the referee. Ngutunui kicked off but were soon penalised, and Waikeria were attacking, using the side line to advantage. The ball was shot out smartly for the backs to handle. Newton dashed over for a try, which King converted. Waikeria A 5, Ngutunui 0. The Westerners attacked, but offside play sent them back. But the forwards rushed upfield again and a penalty was awarded. K. Tautari kicked a goal from an awkward angle. Ngutunui 3, Waikeria 5. Even play followed, and Ngutunui missed a chance by faulty handling, and play was worked down field, where a penalty gave King an unsuccessful shot at goal. From the drop-out Diack secured and sent his backs away, but a penalty saw the leather go out at the halt-way flag. In some loose play Waikeria backs flashed up the side line and Morgan dodg ed over at the corner flag. The kick failed. Waikeria 8, Ngutunui 3. Ngutunui forwards bustled up field again and Owens improved with a line kick to Waikeria’s 25 flag. Scrums were Indecisive, and then the Ngutunuis bustled over at the corner flag, only to lose possession. Thereafter play was in mid-field and then Waikeria’s rearguard swung into action, , but a forward pass spoiled it. Ngutunui forwards rushed -play upfield, and when Owens kicked through Tautoko got up in time to score a try, but Tautari failed with the kick. Ngutu nui 6, Waikeria 8. Promptly Waikeria attacked right down the centre of the field, and obtained a penalty, _ but Morgan failed with the kick, and Owens cleared. Play was soon back in mid-field, and some hard play resulted, with the Waikerias doing best in line-outs, but the Ngutunuis were very dashing in loose play. After half-time the Ngutunuis rushed to the attack, and were awarded a penalty 35 yards out. But they didn’t try for a goal, and the Ngutunuis again pressed. The defence held and soon the ball came loose for Newton to gather it in and outpace the opposition for a good try. The kick was a poster. Waikeria 11, Ngutunui 6 The Ngutunuis again pressed, but were beaten off, until a mis-field let Owens break through, and he lasted long enough to score a try. He took the kick himself, but missed. Ngutunui 9, Waikeria 11. The pace was lively and Waikeria made ground, but lost it, and play was in neutral territory, with scrums and line outs. Diack side-stepped neatly to put Waikeria on the attack, but they were forced back and the Ngutunuis were bustling hard. Even play followed, and then the Waikeria backs badly fooled the opposition for Ake to score a clever try. King added the minor points. Waikeria 16, Ngutunui 9. Waikeria had stood up best to the gruelling pace, and were trying to open the game as much as possible, for they bad a useful margin of points. Then the pace slackened and Ngutunui took play right to the corner, but the defence held. Diack flashed through and gained 40 yards, and some lively work saw the Waikerias dangerous. The final whistle sounded with the scores —Waikeria 16, Ngutunui 9.
