. GIFT EVENING. (Own Correspondent.) The gift evening arranged in honour of Miss V. West and Mr K. Parkes, in view of their approaching marriage, attracted a large attendance to the Library on Monday evening. A very good programme of entertaining items was presented, cards were played and community singing was a feature. Clever competitions were won by Mrs Danby and Mrs West. Mr T. Steel, in making the presentations to the guests of honour, referred to the many good qualities of both, and he concluded with the assemblage’s heartiest wishes for the .future. Mr Parkes suitably r& sponded. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. The annual dance promoted by the Pirongia Ladies’ Hockey Club took place on Wednesday evening, in the Memorial Hall. The function was well attended, but the capacity house expected by some members ot the executive was not realised. Mrs Leckie’s orchestra provided the dance music. Miss W. Gilbert (Te, Awamutu) was warmly applauded for her demonstration of tap dancing, and she was heartily encored. Messrs J. Macky and J. Scott carried out the duties of masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo competition was won by Miss E. Shaw and partner. During the evening opportunity was taken to congratulate Miss G. Bell upon being chosen to represent Auckland In the provincial tournament, to be held at Blenheim. Mr G. Bainbridge, iii a neat speech, asked Miss Bell to accept a small .token from her fellow members, to mark the occasion, and Miss Bell acknowledged the gift, amid loud applause. "" '
