SOME INTERESTING COMPARISONS. TE AWAMUTU’S POSITION. The statistics attached to the latest Railways Statement, presented to the House on Thursday afternoon, afford opportunity for of railway, business at stations in some of the dairying districts of the South Auckland area, during the year ended March 31st, 1936.

Total number of passenger journeys undertaken from Frankton was f 102,403, from Hamilton 68,877, from Te Kuiti 56,666, from Te Awamutu 29,629, from Otorohanga 17,704, from Morrinsville 27,293, from Te Aroha 18,067, from Cambridge 5043, from Matamata 21,101, from Putaruru 18,808, from Ohaupo 17,704, and from Ongarue 15,966.'

A comparison of the first and sec-ond-class tickets issued from these stations shows that only 22 first-class tickets were issued from Ohaupo, from Ongarue 127, from Cambridge 112, from Ngaruawahia 344, from Otorohanga 449, from Putaruru 449, from Matamata 503, while Frankton Junction issued 5502. But some more surprising figures are contained in the lists dealing with cattle and calves. Parcels, luggage and mails yielded: From Ngaruawahia £2lO, Frankton £1357, Hamilton £3553, Cambridge £271, Mbrrinsville £1202, Matamata £531, Putaruru £319, Te Aroha £448, Ohaupo £43, Te Awamutu £1431, Otorohanga £11,87, Te Kuiti £1306, and Ongarue £lB3. Te Kuiti tops the list with the total value forwarded, accounting for £77,031, followed by Ngaruawahia £63,580, and Frankton £60,330, with Hamilton £40,099, Cambridge £5865, Morrinsville £42,837, Matamata £21,012, Putaruru £22,165, Te Aroha £7130, Ohaupo £1544, Te Awamutu £29,026, Otorohanga £24,916, and Ongarue £38,373. Among the inward figures Ngaruawahia received 153,031 cows and calves, Frankton 6702, Hamilton 888, Cambridge 2735, Morrinsville 14,983, Matamata 2127, Putaruru 2327, Te Aroha 1131, Ohaupo 1180, Te Awamutu 3868, Otorohanga 2253, Te Kuiti 2876, and Ongarue 549.

The number of pigs and sheep received was: Ngaruawahia 103,826, Frankton 76,297, Hamilton 6783, Cambridge 10,382, Morrinsville 141,562, Matamata 26,399, Putaruru 38.720, Te Aroha 3883, Ohaupo 10,188, Te Awamutu 75,765, Otorohanga 22,462, Te Kuiti 37,733 and Ongarue 4149.

Ngaruawahia bulks large with livestock handled because of the freezing works • near by, and Morrinsville and Th Awamutu because of the large stock sales. Putaruru, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti and Ongarue have high timber figures because of the proximity of sawmills.
