: AT THE REGENT. COMMENCING TO-NIGHT. “TOUGH GUY.” A boy, a hunted criminal and a dog figure in one of the strangest adventures the screen has ever brought to theatre audiences in “Tough Guy,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s new romance of the Secret Service which is now playing at the Regent Theatre with
Jackie Cooper, Joseph Calleia and Rin Tin Tin Jr., as the three principals. It is unusual in that it is neither a man and boy picture or a dog picture, but a combination of three characters in a comradeship that goes through thrilling escapes, high-powered drama and an amazing series of adventures. Against these is played the drama of tlul relentless pursuit of the Secret Service, never giving up its man. Jackie Cooper plays a role new to him, in that it is more mature than usual —the part of a boy about approaching high school age. Jackie establishes himself as the youngest character actor on the screen in his clever portrayal. Joseph Valleia, of “Small Miracle” and “Riffraff” fame, gives a deft picture of a crook regenerated
by friendship and companionship. The dog actor, son, of the famous Rin Tin Tin of silent days, bids fair to follow in his father’s footsteps. Chester Franklin, who directed “Sequoia,” directed the new picture, with Harvey Stephens, Jean Hersholt, Robert Greig, Edward Pawley, Mischa Auer and Robert Warwick in the cast. The story is an original by Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf.
EMJPIRE THEATRE. “HOT TIP.” NEXT WEEK-END. In “Hot Tip,” at the local Empire Theatre next week-end, James Gleason and Miss Pitts are seen as a scrappily married couple, with Mjss Pitts holding the family purse-strings and refusing to permit her husband to engage in his favourite sport of betting on horse races. When Gleason has enough money thrust upon him to allow his playing the ponies, a comedy-drama results that is said to be the most hilarious of the current season. The popular supporting cast includes Margaret Callahan, Russel Gleason, Ray Mayer, Willie Best and others. Gleason and Ray MeCarey codiredted for R.K.O. Radio.
