TRANSPORT RATES
TOWN CARRIERS AMEND TARIFF. METROPOLITAN DECISIONS. Three largely attended meetings of Wellington, Lower Hutt and Petone carriers have just been held and they rank las the largest meetings ever yet held. The purpose was a discussion of the altered conditions arising out of the increases in drivers’ wages and the shorter working hours. Four committees were set up to go fully into matters of costing and servicing in the different branches of collection and delivery. In particular the inquiry involved parcels, general merchandise, builders requisites and customhouse agents’ work. The committees duly reported back the results of investigation and the result wias the adoption of new tariff rates. Revised price lists of carriers’ charges were adopted, ordered to be printed, and to come into force in general observance on September Ist. The new tariff is designed to adjust prices in accordance with the new conditions. Similar action has been taken by the carriers in Christchurch and Dunedin, and it is understood Auckland carriers have united to similar purpose.
