Mrs L. A. Johnston, of Mutu Street, left last night for Christchurch, where she will visit relatives prior to going to Greymouth.
Mr and Mrs D. C. Clarkson, of Mandeno Street, are spending the holidays with Mr and Mrs J. S. Russell at Pukeroro.
A kitchen evening is to be tendered at Hairini this evening to a popular young lady resident of the district who is shortly to be married to an equally popular young Te Awamutu man.
Mi George Lawn, lecturer in economics at Canterbury University College, and Mr Mark Silverstone, chairman of the finance committee of the Dunedin City Council, have been appointed to the directorate of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. They replace Mr Janies Begg (Dunedin) and Mr Norton Francis (Christchurch), whose term of office expired on July 31 last.
Mir Arthur G. Osborne, a member of the Northcote Borough Council, who contested the Parnell seat at the last general election, has been chosen ■as the Labour candidate for the Manukau seat rendered vacant by the appointment of Mr W. J. Jordan to the High Commissionership. Mr Osborne was born in Christchurch 45 years ago and for many years has been closely associated with the Labour Party.
There w<as a full attendance of members of the Stratford staff of Messrs Newton King, Ltd., to bid farewell to the manager, My Austin Yarndley, prior to his departure for Te Awamutu. The speeches of the departmental heads testified to the popularity of the guest among all sections of the company’s employees. Mr Yarndley was presented with a chiming clock, and Mrs Yarndley with an engraved silver cigarette case.
