AS REPORTED IN THE WAIPA POST OF 15th AUGUST, 1911.
Mr J. G. B. Gifford, formerly a member of the firm of Gifford and Dunkley, storekeepers, has bought a stationery business, and will thus not be leaving Te Awamutu. At the Oddfellows’ Ball on Friday Dr Henderson, on behalf of the local Lodge, presented to Mrs H. Y. Collins a brooch as a memento of appreciation of the ready help she had so frequently given at social functions. At hockey on Wiednesday Te Awamutu and Kihikih tied, one goal each. Korakonui school opened last Monday with a dozen children on the roll.
A ratepayer wrote to the Town Board at its last meeting offering to install a water tower and pumping plant for £5OOO. This is to be considered together with the proposed gravitation supply. Pirongia residents held a meeting last Saturday at which Mr Death presided. A committee was set up to consider schemes for erecting a new hall to replace the 50-year-old hall at the back of the post office. It was decided to press for the settlement of the absentee acre sections. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs H. O. Death, C. C. Berry, A. W. Jones, H. Meyers, A. E. Fear, W. Macky, and T. Seccombe. The secretary of the Postal Department has promised to advise the Chamber of Commerce how much will be needed as a local subscription for a town clock at the local post office. The post office is now on skids in readiness for removal to nearer Mr Middlebrook’s shop, thus leaving the site available for the new brick building.
