Hor.i Tonga, of Otewa, a native of the South Sea Islands, was charged with being the rider of a motor cycle on the old Te Kuiti-Otewa Road, and failing to keep such vehicle as far as practicable to the left of the centreline of the road. He was further charged with negligent driving on the same occasion. This was a case in which the defendant, on his motorcycle, and the County clerk (Mr S. J. Fortescue), on his bicycle, came into violent collision, both riders receiving injuries. • The defendant, Tonga, stated that he was not accustomed to the rules of the road in this country. In Tonga it was the custom for a poor man, like himself, to give way to a rangatira, as he took Mr Fortescue to be; however, he would know the rules here better on future occasions.

On the first charge Tonga was convicted and discharged, and on the second charge he was fined Ips, and 12s costs.
