LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

TOKANUI BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. PRESIDENT’S REPORT. The monthly and annual meeting of the Tokanui branch of the league of Mothers was held at Crossroads Hall on Wednesday. The president presided over a very good attendance of members. Following the League Prayers and the reading of the "Aims and Objects and Rules,” sympathetic reference was made to the bereavement suffered by the secretary, Mrs Illing. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Correspondence and business finalised the year s work, and the annual meeting followed. The annual report and balance sheet revealed progress, and the financial statement was most satisfactory. The election of officers for the ensuing year was as follows: President, Mrs r. H. Barnett (re-elected); vicepresidents, Mrs Howcroft senr (reelected), and Mrs D. H. Cavers; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. Illing, re-elected; correspondent. Miss Elsie Howcroft. Votes of appreciation were accorded, and eulogistic reference made to the president and hon. secretary (Mrs Barnett and Mrs Illing respectively), and as a token of the esteem in which these ladies are held they were the recipients of beautiful pieces of crystal ware. Both ladies suitably expressed their appreciation. Knitted peggy squares were judged, the winner being Mrs Thomson. During afternoon tea a beautifully iced cake made and donated by Mrs Illing ■ was cut in the customary manner. The meeting altogether was a very happy one. Mrs Barnett gave an account of her visit to Australia, and Mrs Harding gave the thought for the month. Following is the president's report: I have the honour to present to members the fourth annual report. In looking over the records of the year past 1 am pleased to report a continued progress in membership, and the friendly spirit, the personal interest and co-operation of each member all combine for the success of the branch. The secretary’s report reveals a very satisfactory position. Before proceeding with the report I wish to make reference to the very sad loss our branch sustained during the year in the passing to the Better Land of Mrs G. Cruickshank. Her spirit ot loyalty and devotion to the League was an inspiration and a memory for all of ns. Sympathy has neen extended to other members and friends who have suffered bereavement. The activities recorded have been many. A successful bring and buy stall was held. Voluntary contributions have assisted the Auckland provincial organising fund. A demonstration and various competitions have proved successful, one of which was for the best knitted peggy square, The response for this competition was keen and generous, some of the members’ children competing. These squares were eventually made into a quilt and forwarded to I.Y.A. community sing, the proceeds being given to the Mayor’s relief fund and the quilt to a deserving case. Another quilt is being forwarded to I.Y.A. We are indebted to Mrs G. Perry, of Hokitika, for an interesting address, Miss Eyre (Te Awamutu) for a travel talk, and Rev. Payne (Otorohanga) for an address on "Motherhood in Later Years,” and to the following ladies for vocal and elocutionary items: Mrs Middlebrook, Mrs Reynolds, and Misses Alderson and McConkey for a playette. A regular supply ot magazines has been forwarded to Tokanui Mental Hospital. On Anzac Day a wreath was placed on the monument. Papers submitted by members on Home Life, Gardening, and Favourite Author deserve special mention, revealing careful thought In the compiling ot same. The annual children’s party, held at Mrs H. Wyllie’s, and the garden party at Mrs Thornton Walker’s, were both enjoyable and successful afternoons, and to those ladies we extend our appreciation for their kindness. Presentations were made to Misses M. and E. Howcroft. Before concluding this report I wish to place on record the gratitude ot the branch to our secretary, Mrs Illing; our town correspondent, Miss Davies, whose valuable cooperation thus with provincial activities and Grey Lynn branch has been a source of continual interest and help; and our own correspondent, Miss Elsie Howcroft. To all these ladies their work and love and faithfulness has at all times been wonderful. Appreciation to all members for their co-operation always to ensure the progress and the high value to the whole community ol the League’s beneficent work, which is not merely an association of women but- a league of motherhood, and as such demands of its members a specially strong bond of fellowship and deep sense of responsibility. The continued interest of all members of the League throughout the Dominion should help to point the way to the betterment of future citizens. Sympathetic fellowship can achieve what individual effort is powerless to do.
