JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

REQUEST FROM TE AWAMUTU. To further a proposal for the establishment ot a junior high school at Te Awamutu, a deputation waited upon the Auckland Education Board on Wednesday, and requested that a competent officer be sent to the district to assess the need for such a school and the feeling of the different committees on the scheme. Mr T. U. Wells, chairman of the Board, explained to the deputation that detailed information on a number ot points had to be sent to the department, and until this information was collected nothing could be done, although every member of the Board was most sympathetic to the proposal. "The consolidation idea is spreading rapidly,” he said. “Some districts that were previously opposed to it are coming round. The benefits of consolidating schools are becoming known, and there is a consistent demand for consolidation now.” Another member said that he had been approached by two committee members who had been strong opponents of consolidation in one district. They had told him they were amazed at the progress of the children under the consolidation scheme, and wished now that it had been put into operation earlier.

It was decided that the secretary, Mr D. W. Dunlop, should visit the district next week to collect the necessary information.
