CULLING BY COMPULSION
Germany’s traditional efficiency is now being extended to embrace her dairy industry. Recently compulsory milk control has been introduced by decree in Germany, although details of the technical application of this decree, which no doubt will be put into force very gradually, are not yet known. The aim is clear, however, Cows with insufficient yield are to be eliminated and replaced by animals best capable of exploiting existing fodder. The main factor behind the movement seems to be official regret that very large quantities of very good fodder are to-day being wasted upon animals with insufficient yields to justify such feeding. The output of 1.1 million of the 10 million dairy cows in Germany is already under control, the quality and quantity of the milk produced being tested and the unsatisfactory producers being eliminated. Hand in hand with this control, free advice is given concerning feeding, selection for breeding purposes, etc.
