AWKWARD SITUATION
TENNIS UMPIRE CANNOT SEE Four bewildered tennis players in a tournament at West Twickenham Hard Court Club, Strawberry-hill, S.W., could not understand the decisions of the umpire, Mr W. Williams. A mixed doubles match was taking place, with Baron H. L. de Morpurgo, the Italian Davis Cup player, partnered by Miss E. Harvey, the British Wightman Cup player, opposing Mr N. H. Latchfora and Miss G. M. Southwell. Their bewilderment came about halfway through the match, when they suddenly looked at each other in astonishment at the errors of judgment made by the umpire. Then Mr. Williams got down from his high chair and confessed that he could not see part of the court. He said a film had formed over one of his eyes which created a blind spot, and he asked to be excused from officiating any longer. It was found that a small blood vessel had broken.
