SCHEME REJECTED
BUTTER EQUALISATION Tasmanian dairy farmers by a large majority recently decreed that the Australian butter equalisation scheme shall not remain in operation in Tasmania after May 1 next. Consequently, the Dairy Products Act, which governs the scheme, will go out of existence as from that date, and open competition on the local market will follow. The Government decided recently to allow dairymen to vote for or against the continuan&j of the scheme, and when the poll was declared it was revealed that less than 50 per cent, of the dairymen exercised their right. The vote was as follows:- —For continuance, 1241; against 1988; informal, 8; total voters, 3237. There are almost 8000 dairymen eligible to vote.
