DIFFICULTY OF SECURING TEACHERS. A difficulty which is at present being experienced by certain education boards in securing teachers for sole charge grade 1 schools and grade 1 assistant positions in rural schools was commented on in an interview last Friday night by the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser.

“At the beginning of the year,” said Mr Fraser, “it was decided to keep all certificated trained teachers not then holding permanent positions in employment as supplementary teachers until they had an opportunity of securing permanent appointments. Unfortunately a number of these young teachers are not applying for positions as vacancies occur, with the result that education boards are faced with the alternative of employing uncertificated and retired teachers when there is really no necessity for them to do so.

“ Education boards are therefore being asked to notify individually all these additional teachers that unless they make reasonable efforts to secure permanent positions or accpt relieving work wherever it is offered, it will be necessary to determine whether the policy of retaining such teachers on the salary list will be continued.”.
