HOCKEY

LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES.

INTERESTING CONTESTS. With two hockey fields now available for matches on Albert Park, the Waipa Hockey Association staged five contests last Saturday afternoon, three in the ladies’ competition for the Finch Rosebowl and two in the men’s section for the Empson Cup. Results:— LADIES’ MATCHES. __ Paterangi v. Korakonui. This game, controlled by Mr E. A. Spiers, was interesting throughout, but the Paterangis knew too much about the game for their opponents, and won eventually by nine goals to one. For the winners goals were registered by R. Spiers (3), E. Spiers (3), J. Silvester (2) and M. Macky, while Korakonui’S' score was obtained by M. Rae.

Pirongia v. Old Girls.—This game was also keenly contested, but again the experience of Pirongia players stood 'them in good stead, for G. Bell and P. Sifleet each scored two goals, and the defence kept the Old Girls from scoring.

Hairini v. Otorohanga.—This proved to be quite the best contest of the afternoon, and though the two elevens seemed well matched, t'he enterprise and team work of the Hairinis won them victory by four goals to one. MEN’S CONTESTS. Paterangi v. Te Rahu.—This game was plaved on No. 1 ground, with Messrs R. Hinton and C. Reed as umpires. Paterangi were quickly in scoring position, and Len Spiers netted a neat goal, followed a few minutes later by a goal from L. Karl’s stick. M)anukau added a third, Geo. Finch a fourth, while in the closing stages Len Spiers scored one and Finch two, making the tally eight to nil.

Te Awiamutu v. High School.—The Tq Awamijtu’s had decidedly the best of matters in this contest, and the final whistle sounded with them leading by four goals to nil. The School eleven is young, and inexperienced, bdt there were indications that they will be a factor to be seriously regarded before the season closes.
