\ ITEMS OF INTEREST. TOWN BOARD MEETS. (Our Resident Representative.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Town Board was held Thursday evening when the. following commissioners were in 'attendance:. J'.’ 0. R. Phillips, A. P. Grey, R. T. Rhodes, R. Bell, H. E. Lawrence, C. Jackson and S. Mcßobie, and Mr P. H. Gosse, town clerk and engineer. At the request of the Education Board it was agreed to improve the roadway adjacent to the consolidated school.

The Department of Labour advised, that, provided the Town Board acts as the employing authority, and generally supervises the works, the utilisation of relief labour is approved under certain stipulated conditions. An offer to purchase two old sheds on the catchment area, recently acquired by the Board, alongside the reservoir, was left to the Finance Committee to consider. The Bank of New Zealand advised that the Board’s application for an' overdraft limit of £B5O for the current financial year was approved without time commitment.

Arrangements were finalised with local sports clubs for the use of the Island Reserve recreation grounds. The following rates were struck:— General 13d in the £ on the unimproved value; hospital, 5-8 d; roads and paths, Id; kerbing and channelling, Sd, water, 2Jd; a total of 6 l-8d in the £.

The Board proposed to introduce a sewerage system, which, in the meantime, will serve the principal business and residential area and will dovetail into a major scheme for the whole of the town area, to be introduced at a future date. The matter of the first' scheme will be finalised at a special meeting shortly. The area decided upon to include in the preliminary operations lie to the eastward of Turongo and Tutunui streets, and it is expected, that the wotks will be commenced at an 4arly date. Mr S. B. Sims, surveyor, submitted for the Board’s approval a subdivision plan of Sections 14 and 16 Block XVll.—Approved. The receipts, as from the 23rd April, 1936, were: Rate arrears and general, £l6 10s; municipal pictures, £l7B 6s; hall hire, £lO 17s 6d; sani'tation, £1 16s 6d; licenses, £9l 18s; screen advertising, £6 6s; sundry, £BO 10s 4d. The credit balance in the bank stands at £221 14s Bd, and cash in hand, £134 13s 9d, a total credit of £356 8s sd.

The Finance Committee recommended that the following provisions be made on the annual estimates for various works: Te Kawa and Herehuku Street formations, £100; main highways maintenance, £25 (Board’s share); Otorohanga-Honikiwi main highway for tar sealing, £110; cartage, pipes, metal, etc., £6O; Orahiri Terrace, £2O; foreman’s salary, £180; lighting, £110; fire brigade, £6O; streets, gardens, beautifying plots, etc., £loo.—Approved.

The estimated receipts and expenditure for the year ending 31st March, 1937, are £1534 and £1313 respectively. A large amount of routine business was transacted and accounts amountto £359 4s Id passed for payment.
