POPULATION FIGURES

WAIPA COUNTY’S BIG ' INCREASE.

The latest figures released by the Government Statistician as a result of the preliminary count following the census last month show a very considerable increase for the counties ot Waipa, Raglan and Waikato. The present figures are: Waipa, 12,731; Raglan, 9495; Waikato, 12,123. In all three totals the interior town districts are excluded. Kihikihi town district's population is shown as 322, and that of Leamington town district 543. The figures for the census ten years ago make very interesting comparisons. Waipa in 1926 had 9349, an increase of 3382; Raglan then had 7054, an increase of 2441; Waikato County’s total was 8932, an increase of 3191. Kihikihi’s total increased by only seven, and Leamington showed a decrease ot eleven.

It is interesting to look back over earlier figures. For instance, at the census of 1911 Waipa County’s total was 5838, so that it has more than doubled. Raglan County’s figures in 1911 were 2907 and Waikato’s 5291. Both therefore show great increases, particularly Raglan. Kihikihi in those days had a population of 271, and Leamington 396. In 1923 the estimated populations were: Waipa County 8845, Raglan 4955, and Waikato 8445. Kihikihi town district’s figure (estimated) in that year was 270, and Leamington’s 550.
