VALUED OFFICER RETIRES

MR A. W. WARD’S LONG SERVICE. After 46 years’ service with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Mr A. W. Ward, manager of the Hamilton branch, will retire on superannuation on June 30. Mr Ward, who was born in Marton, is a son of the late Judge Ward, of the Native Land Court, and received his education at the Wanganui Collegiate School. Mr Ward joined the Loan and Mercantile Company at Wanganui in 1890 and’ was transferred to the Palmerston North branch in 1898. He became auctioneer for the company in 1902 and was transferred to Feilding as agent and auctioneer 11 years later. Mr Ward returned to Palmerston North as manager in 1918 and came to Hamilton as manager in 1922 and has remained in Hamilton since then.

As a young man Mr Ward was a keen rowing enthusiast and Rugby footballer. .Of later years he has taken great interest in horticulture and has specialised in dahlia growing. He has taken many prizes in horticultural shows for his dahlia exhibits. He is a vice-president of the Hamilton Horticultural Society. Mr Wtard, who is well-known and highly respected throughout the Waikato, will continue to reside in Hamilton. An elder brother, Mr R. P. Ward, C.8.E., who was former Un-der-Secretary for Justice retired about three years ago, while another brother, Mr W. L. Ward, who was formerly inspector of the Bank of Australasia, is Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank.
