THIRD-PARTY RISKS

NO STATE ACTION PROPOSED. A suggestion made in certain quarters that the Government proposes to take over from insurance companies all third party risks and workers’ compensation cover was denied in Wellington on Saturday by the Prime Minister, Mr Savage. It was pointed out to him that rumours along these lines had been freely circulated, chiefly. in Christchurch, and that there was said to be a consequent tendency for insurance shares to weaken. "The matter has received no consideration whatsoever,” the Prime Minister said. "To the best of my knowledge It has not been raised by a single member of the Cabinet. I do not say the matter would not be considered if the necessity arose, but our aim is to leave matters in the hands of private enterprise until it can be shown that private enterprise has failed. That is the time for the State to step in and assume control.”
