SURPRISE PARTY.

(Our Resident Representative.)

A largely attended surprise party of Otorohanga and district Girl Guides and ex-Guides, paid an evening visit to the Kio Kio home of Miss V. Hitchings (lieutenant of the corps), on the occasion' of her pending marriage. Captain Paola Langkilde, of the Otorohanga Guides, led the party, and a very pleasant time was spent in games, competitions, and Guide items.

Lieutenant Hitchings was presented with a very beautiful crystal bowl, as a token of the respect in which she is held by the Girl Guides; with whom she had for long been associated. The singing of “ She’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” followed a bountiful supper spread, and the evening's enjoyment was brought -to a regretful close with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” WOMEN’S DIVISION.

O’Rourke’s Orchestra provided the dance musi<s while paper hats, Monte Carlo, and balloon dances were featured. METHODIST BAZAAR. The annual bazaar, held at the Otorohanga Town Hall, under the auspices of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild, was favoured by good weather conditions, and an excellent patronage from the town and district. The bazaar was opened by the Rev. Kenneth R. Small, owing to the 'rib-' sence of Mrs F. O. R. Phillips. The usual stalls, games and competitions, did excellent business throughout, re-' suiting in £39 being raised for church purposes. , RIFLE SHOOTING. The Otorohanga Rifle Club’s competitive shooting season has now closed, after a very successful term. The season’s trophy winners were: Club championship, L. Palmer; handicap aggregate, B. Palmer; service championship, P. J. Doull; Gray trophy, F. Hyde; Holmes’ trophy, L. Palmer; Hyde trophy, L. Palmer; Westmacott trophy, B. Palmer; L. Palmer, of Mangaorongo, was a most consistent marksman throughout. EDUCATIONAL. Otorohanga was visited on Tuesday by Mr Benge, assistant-Director of Education, Wellington; Mr Dunlop, secretary to the Auckland Board of Education, and Mr W. I. Bowyer, district representative on the Auckland Education Board. A complete round of the routes to be used by the new State buses, that will convey the children to and from the consolidated school was made by the party. Deputations were received at the. various county settlements, and suggestions received from many sources, as to the extension of bus routes, and other matters. The new buses will run on June Ist. The party discussed the question of bringing in the Ngahape childreri, with the chairman of that school comhiittee, in lieu of building a new school there. It is likely that the driving of the new buses will be undertaken by teachers of the consolidated school, in order that the children will be under the direct supervision of their teachers from leaving their homes in the morning until their return iq thq. evening. . . ; ;<■
