MOTOR CAR INDUSTRY
DEVELOPMENT IN AMERICA Three hundred horseless carriages were built in America in the year 1895. Some of them had whip sockets on the dash. It was only necessary for them to run. They looked like a rich man’s plaything (states an American journal). Ten years later twenty-five thousand automobiles were produced. If an owner got home without the help of a team of horses he gave a dinner to his friends. Then the engineers began to standardise. The great business was developing. Twenty years later 892,618 motor cars were produced. The Society of Automotive Engineers with brains and initiative had standardised the building of individual transportations units. The momotor car industry was established. To-day /on the silver anniversary of the greatest industry in the world nearly 18,000,000 motor cars -are in use in the- United States. Forty-five thousand miles of wonderful roads have been built in the last few years. More tha» £400,000,000 represents the, wholesale value of the output of 1923. Yet the industry is just beginning. Transportation is the essence of civilisation, and the motor car has made the United States a compact nation without division —one language, one purpose, one ideal.
