FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT

GELIGNITE PREMATURELY EXPLODES A fearful accident occurred at Lake Farm, Ngaroto, on Thursday morning, by which a Hindoo drainer, named Waryan Singh, aged about 40, was terribly mangled. It appears he was draining in rough swampy country at the back of the estate, and had set a charge of gelignite. With his son Waryan retired for a couple of chains to allow the charge to explode, but as the explosion did not occure he went to investigate. The charge went off as the man was standing over it, and he received the full force in the face. His nose and right eye were shattered, there is a terrible hole in the skull, his right arm is shattered above the elbow, and his right wrist is broken badly. Dr. Hall and Constable Hooker hurried to the scene, but practically nothing could be done, except to improvise a stretcher and bring him up to the nearest house. Singh is in a low state and is not expected to recover.—Waipa Post.
