FARMERS' UNION

A DEAD BRANCH Several attempts have been made to revive a little interest in the Waihou branch of the Farmers’ Union, the latest being 1 on Thursday night, when a meeting was called by advertisement to be held in the Waihou Hall. It was a most unpleasant night and no one but the secretary and the last president elected put in an appearance. Very few, if any, of the members have paid their subscriptions of late, but the branch is financial and has a few pounds in hand. As there appears to be no likelihood of getting any life into the branch the officers are anxious to wind up its affairs and dispose of the money in hand in some that would give satisfaction to the contributors. Without a quorum no direction can be given and it is now proposed to write to the secretary of the Auckland Provincial executive asking for advice. Mr Cooper, senr., speaking to a News reporter on Thursday evening, said that at one time the branch had quite a large membership and very keen- interest was taken in the work, but indifference had gradually crept in and the primary producers in the district were now left without any recognised organisation by means of which they could protect their interests or express their views. Mr Cooper, on being asked if any of the Farmers’ Union’s organisers ever visited the district, replied that nothing had been done for some time in this way, nor had any special effort been made to arouse enthusiasm or give the meetings an educative value by arranging for lectures from experts on the various departments of farm activities.
