CONCRETE ROAD

PROGRESS UNDER MR W. J. GIBBS A high compliment was paid to Mr W. J. Gibbs, the Piako County engineer, by a settler who called at the News Office on Tuesday. The engineer, as is generally known, has been subjected to much adverse criticism on account of the poor progress made with the concrete road. Mr Gibbs, who had not been in charge of the job till recently, had stated at the Council table that the work could be done much quicker and that he was prepared to take charge and make good this statement. Eventually Mr Gibbs did take over complete control of the work and all that he promised has been accomplished. Previously three chains per day was the most that could be laid down, but Mr Gibbs laid down 33 chains in eight days. The length laid down by Mr Gibbs on different days was 3i chains, 4£ chains, 5 chains and 5i chains. It is now believed, the settler informed the News representative, that had Mr Gibbs been in charge of the work from the commencement there would have been sufficient money to lay the concrete road as far as Hopkin’s corner.
