COUNTY ROADS

ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer (Mr W. J. Gibbs) reported to the meeting of the Piako County Council as folows: — Maukoro Deviation Formation: The contract for this work is proceeding very satisfactorily. As soon as the legislation is completed we can proceed with the completion of last section of formation, and so give a through road to Patetonga. The fencing of this road is also proceeding satisfactorily. Tahuna-Ohinewai Road Formation: The whole of this work is now practically completed, together with the metalling of three miles of the western end, and the erection of the third reinforced concrete culvert.

The large bins at Tahuna quarry are now completed and in good working order. The elevator has been erected and is working very smoothly. The quarry is now well opened up and the whole plant is in such a position that 100 yards of metal can be produced per day. Hangawer Road Metalling: This work has been pushed along at a great rate; over one mile of metal has been placed. McGregor’s and Coronation Roads have been repaired with gravel. Kurunui Road Metalling is proceeding very satisfactorily but will now be held up until better weather prevails.

Roache’s Road Metalling: This work is proceeding and will be pushed on with during fine weather. Morrinsville-Kiwitahi Road Metalling: This work has been pushed along during fine weather, but the road is too soft to proceed further this autumn. Bell’s Road Metalling: Nearly one mile of metal has been placed on this road during the last six weeks. Milliken’s Road Metalling: Over one mile of metal has been placed during the last five weeks, this being carried out under two contracts. Some metal repairs will be carried out to the Morrinsville-Kiwitahi and the Kiwitahi road. Walton-Kiwitahi Road Metalling: A contract was let for a small section near the junction of Milliken’s road; the work is proceeding slowly. Waitoa-Matamata Main Highway, Section 2: The metalling of this section is completed and the shingling of same will be pushed on with. Kerehoni-Walton Road: The metalling of the first section of this road is completed; the shingling is being gone on with. Walton Station Road: The metalling of this road is practically completed; the shingling of same will be placed in a few days. Waitoa-Matamata Road, Wairere: i A small section of li chains of metalling near the Matamata County boundary was completed. Some arrangement should be made with the Quarry Companies for stacking metal during this season.

Waghorn’s Road Metalling: This work has been pushed on with at a great rate; also Stanley and Alexander Roads are being proceeded with. Manawaru Drainage Area: Portion of school, Cassidy’s and Alexander Road drains have been well cleaned. Portion of School and Hungahunga Roads have been graded up. The diversion of a creek in McGill’s property near the Te ArohaGordon road should be gone on with, also the cleaning of the drain on south side of Diagonal road near Thompson’s Track. That portion of the road surface requires some attention also. Stanley Road Concreting: During the month nearly half a mile was placed. Diagonal Road formation is now completed. No. 1 Road Bitumen Sealing: A further section of 40 chains has been completed; the work has been held up on account of bad weather. Notices re heavy traffic should be published. Whakahora concrete bridge will now be proceeded with. Mr Barnett has commenced the stopbank protection works on his property and portion of same will be constructed along the line of road. Arrangements should now be made to construct the Piako River bridge at this point. Te Aroha-Hamilton Main Road: Considerable maintenance work is now urgently required, the road being in a very bad state of repair. Many of the other metalled roads throughout the County also require more maintenance.
