THE LATE MR MASSEY

TRIBUTE BY PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

Reference was made to the death of the late Mr Massey at the meeting of the Piako County Council yesterday. Mr F. W. Walters, chairman, said that at the last meeting of the Council they had carried a resolution expressing sympathy with Mr Massey in his illness and a hope that he would recover. Unfortunately that was not to be and as they were aware Mr Massey had passed away last week. He now wished to move that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Massey and family. The most pleasing thing about the press reports was the appreciation shown of the late Mr Massey’s work by all sections of the people. This had been more noticeable in connection with Mr Massey than any other Prime Minister. As the cables showed extensive references had been made at Home to the great work Mr Massey had done for the Empire. There was only one other Prime Minister comparable as an Imperialist to Mr Massey, and that was the late Mr Seddon, but he believed that of all the Dominion and Colonial. Premiers they had had none would be remembered as well as Mr Massey in 50 years’ time. Cr. Kennedy in seconding said that he could only endorse all that the chairman had said. Nothing could be added to the testimonies already published of Mr Massey’s worth and ability. All he regretted was that he had not been able to spend the last years of his life peaceably with his wife and family and free from the political turmoil.
