RUAKURA

FARMERS’ WINTER FARM SCHOOL

The Department of Agriculture has decided to hold the annual farmers’ winter farm school at Ruakura Farm of Instruction from the 25th to 30th May, 1925. The course of lecturts and practical demonstrations given at the farm school aims at providing farmers with modern views on farm management. The course set out for this year’s farm schools embraces the following subjects: Pasture Production: Types of grass land, their composition, origin and development; establishment, stocking, top-dressing, cultivation, mowing, grazing and renewal of -different types of pastures; hay and ensilage making and their relation to pasture maintenance.

Crop Production: The production and utilisation of supplementary crops for summer, autumn and winter feeding of dairy cows.

Crop Enemies: The recognition and control of common pests and diseases attacking farm crops. Livestock Management: The management and feeding of dairy herd; common diseases affecting dairy cows; care of milk and cream; sheep management—wool classing; production of pork and bacon on dairy farms. Farm Equipment: Concrete on the farm—fencing posts, water troughs; wool shed, yards and dip; milking shed; gates and hurdles; shelter trees and plantations. Farmers attending the course are accommodated at Ruakura Farm of Instruction for 45/- for the week's course. Applications for enrolment with the accommodation fee of 45/- should be made to the Farm Manager, Mr A. W. Green, as soon as possible, as the accommodation is limited.
