FOOTBALL

THE RUGBY GAME OPENING OF COMPETITIONS • The Cup Competitions under jurisdiction of the Piako Rugby Union were opened on Saturday last in ideal weather, and before a very fair attendance at the various grounds. The football was of a good order for so early in the season, some of the teams showing excellent combination, and augurs well for future matches. Only one player was reported to the insurance fund, although a few received minor cuts and bi’uises. The games were not started to time, but this will be remedied in future. The following are the results at a glance:

SENIORS Manawaru 6 v. City 3. Terriers 18 v. Waihou 3. JUNIORS Terriers 17 v. Waihou 3. City 22 v. Manawaru 3. THIRD GRADE Waihou 35 v. St. Mark’s 0. TERRIER SENIORS v. WAIHOU The senior game between Terriers and Waihou (last year’s cha'mpionswas played on the Bridge Domain, Te Aroha, and the result came somewhat as a surprise. The first half of /the game was entirely in Terrier’s favour, but Waihou asserted themselves after the interval and made things a -bit more even. - Biddos, a newcomer playing for Terriers, played a good game for them and scored two tries, J. Porter and H. Sleep also notching one each, while T. Mclnnes and L. Hughes kicked a penalty goal each. A. Law scored Waihou’s only try. Mr A. Whatford gave every satisfaction as referee.

CITY SENIORS v. MANAWARU

The game between City (the newly formed Club) and Manawaru was played on the latter’s ground, and after a hard fought fight was won by Manawaru by 6 points to three.. B. Tretheway and Gray scored for the winners, while J. McLaren kicked a beautiful penalty goal for City. Manawaru only fielded 13 men and deserve credit for their win. Mr Barker ably controlled the game.

CITY JUNIORS v MANAWARU

In the junior competition City juniors, a newly formed team, excelled themselves and gave a very pleasing display, their backs handling the ball in a very efficient manner, some very nice combined movements being made by them, enabling their wing man, Roach, on three occasion to run in clear and touch down. Manawaru were not at full strength but that does not detract from the merits of the winners.

Mr W. Jonas refereed in a satisfactory manner.

TERRIER JUNIORS v. WAIHOU

The game between Terrier juniors and Waihou juniors, played at Manawaru, was of a pleasing nature, and some good football was." witnessed. Terriers were getting the ball from the majority of the scrums, but too close play among their backs spoilt many chances. Waihou were holding their own in the forwards and were endeavouring to make it a forward game. There was no score up to the interval, but changing of tactics amon|;st the Terrier backs and stamina told the tale, and it was not long after the interval that the Terriers opened their account by R. Munro crossing and touching down. Terriers maintained their pressure and scored at regular intervals, eventually winning by 17 points to 3, five tries (one of which was converted) to a penalty kicked by “Bunny” Allison, a beautiful kick with bare feet from about 40yds out. For the Terriers the scorers were: R. Munro, L. Slack, H. Armitage (one each), while F. Mace scored twice and converted one of his tries. Tremain played a good game at half for Terriers, and was ably supported by Lipsey, Lane, Munro and P. Mace, and J. Crawford at full back was at his best. The forwards all worked well, and it would not be fair to individualise. Borrie at half, Allison and the full-back were the

best of the Waihou backs, and K. Gray and Thompson were perhaps the best of a hard working pack. Mr T. Turner controlled the game, and gave every satisfaction.

WAIHOU THIRDS v. ST. MARK’S

The third grade game between Wai-

hou and St. Mark’s resulted in a very easy win for the Waihou boys by 35 to nil. The winners gave a nice exhibition of football. Tries for the winners were scored by: T. Goodfellow (5), G. Goodfellow (3), Stewart (1 and a goal from a mark), and Tye (1). One of the tries was converted. Mr Fraser Miller gave every satisiaction as referee.
