It may not be generally known that many native trees can be grown from cuttings. This fact is stated in an article by Mr P. M. Page, Forest Extension Officer, published in circular 10, issued by the New Zealand State Forest Service. It is stated by Mr Page that such varieties as rimu, matai, kahikatea, totara, tanekaha, and miro cuttings should be planted in boxes containing a mixture of sharp sand and leaf mould, and placed in partial shade (such as provided by a bush house) until the cuttings take root.
