ENGINEER’S REPORT

The engineer, Mr W. J. Gibbs, reported as follows to Monday’s meeting of the Piako County Council: * Tahuna-Ohinewai Road: Formation is progressing slowly. The small bridge on the Morrinsville-Tahuna road near Bethell’s will be gone on with towards the end of the week. Maukoro Deviation: A contract was let for formation and culverting ;tr this road. \ ' The timber and all material has been ordered for the erection of the crushing plant at Quine’s quarry, This work should now be pushed on with all speed. The crusher for this quarry has arrived at Morrinsville, and is ready to be hauled out to the crusher site. Hinton’s Quarry, Motumaoho: The crushing plant is now practically ready for crushing, which should be commenced on Thursday, weather permitting. I am requiring some stringers for temporary bridges at Tahuna and Wish to cut and remove some of the gum. trees on the road near Piako for use in bridges. ’ > Kiwitahi-Morrinsville Road Metalling: This woirk is proceeding satisfactorily, and good work has been done in placing the metal. Some grading is now required to form shoulders to same: . ;• Milleken’s Road: About 20 chains of metalling has been completed on this road. Waitoa-Matamata Road, in Walton Roads Loan Area: The metalling of H this road is proceeding satisfactorily. Together with the Chairman. and Cr. McLean I inspected' the Mount road metal deposits, and also visited Piakoiti Valley road. Metal Railed to Walton: Some better arrangement is required re delivery of metal to Walton Wardville Road Bridge: This work is progressing favourably and is nownearing completion. Alexander Road: About 21 miles of this road have been graded up and about 35 chains of metal placed there- '< on.' -, k ’ ' lit fi Concrete piles are now being made at Waiorongomai for several bridges throughout the County. Waiorongomai quarry is now good order for producing a good supply of metal. With reference to the opening of the Army and Navy Creek quarry, I have inspected this and find the cost would be too great to be undertaken during this metalling seasqn, btrt may be undertaken next seasdn if required. ' 1 Stanley Road Concreting : The crete lisnmv placed as far as Glaxo factory. Mikklesen’s' road metalling has progressed favourably, but will not be completed for some time, arid shall be carried out in conjunction with some of the longer carting. A little' more grading is required on this road. ! Mangaiti bridge repairs are now practically completed and are satisfactory. One land span has been gthened six feet. Diagonal Road: The contract for formation is practically completed. A further section of over one mile has also been completed. Grading is also progressing near Scott’s, an Waitoa-Matamata road. Government Subsidies and Grants? Proposals should be made ready for approval on all Works’for this season^ Hutchinson’s* road formation is pro?' gressing slowly, and about half the work is now carried out. Mdtaljing should proceed on Pakarau to Huteh-' 1 inson’s road. Together with Cr. Lowry I inspected the works at Kiwitahi and found same satisfactory. The contractor shbuld employ another truck to push, along the work. Together with the Chairman I rit- J tended a meeting at Waitoa with ference to reconstructing No. 1 Road ' arid to bitumen seal same.
