The Te Aroha News Published Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Mornings. SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1924 MEAT SELLING SCHEME

A scheme the details of which should be of interest to New Zealand meat producers is shortly to be placed before Australian producers by the Australian Meat Council and Sir Henry Jones, of Hobart. The Meat Council is not a trading concern, but is interesting itself in a proposition that has been made by Sir Henry Jones for the opening up of fresh channels of trade. The council views the proposal very favourably, as being likely to prove of great service to the Commonwealth, especially in view of the present financial difficulties on the Continent. Sir Henry Jones’ proposal is to form a private company with a capital of £1,250,000. He proposes to underwrite £150,000 £1 shares himself. The company is to be formed with a view to distributing meat on the Continent by dealing direct with large firms who have large numbers of employees, these firms to purchase large quantities of meat and to distribute it among the employees as part payment of their wages. Sir Tlenry is extremely anxious that the Commonwealth Government and the Australian producers shall become interested in the scheme, so that a line of connection may be taken up between the company that is to be formed and large manufacturers on the Continent to see that the supply of meat was always available. As explained by Mr J. B. Cramsie, the representative of the Meat Council, the Continental firms would be prepared to purchase the meat and to collect the payments from their employees, and immediately to remit the money to the company. Mr Cramsie added that although Sir Henry had had no previous experience in the sale of meat, he had arranged with one large firm in Germany to purchase some hundreds of tons of meat, and this firm had established credit in Holland for payment. This meat was to be distributed among the firm’s employees, and they had expressed their grate-

fulness at the prospect of obtaining' supplies. Sir Henry Jones, Mr Cramsie said, believes that a very large business can be worked up in this way. This same proposal for distributing is now engaging attention in England. Sir Henry has communicated with the Tasmanian Agent-Genera in London, asking him to place the position before Mr Bruce (the Prime Minister), with a view to enlisting his interest in the formation of the proposed company.
