LAUNDRY HINTS

Faded blouses and frocks may be made pure white for next summer by boiling them in this way. To every gallon.of water add a tablespoonful of cream of tartar'and boil‘until there is not a bit of colour left. White silk blouses and undies will never turn yellow if washed in this way. When slightly soiled, wash in a lather made of warm water and some good soap jell/ by squeezing them up and down. N<3 brush or board should be used.

Tepid water should be used for rinsing, to which a few drops of methylated spirits have been added. If there is no mangle, wringing should be light, and the material never twisted, but squeezed.. If there is a mangle, the garment may be placed between a thick towel and rung, provided there are no buttons to crush. Drying should only be partial, and the article rolled in a towel to be ironed at the earliest convenience. A piece of fine cotton or linen should be placed between the iron and the silk. If white silk garments are laundered in this simple way they will look like new until the material is worn out.

To prevent the colours running in washing materials, add a little vinegar to the rinsing water. Should you need a slight stiffening muslin or silk garments, dissolve fialf a dozen knobs of sugar in the rinsing water. The tiniest bit of soda in water for washing black stockings will discolour them either a dirty brown or green, and to keep them a good colour when washed in ordinary soapy water well blue the rinsing water.
