THE CLOVER WEED
HINDRANCE TO DRAINAGE
A RECENTLY DEVELOPED NUISANCE
The clover weed which made its appearance in this district about three years ago is proving a great nuisance in blocking up the flow of water in drains. It is a very prolific grower, especially when drains are carrying little water. It grows so densely that if not checked it will not only hinder the flow of the water, but will actually block it almost completely. The drainage water in places becomes dammed up and the settler largely loses the benefit he should be obtaining from the drain affected from it. As can be readily understood it is adding to the necessity and work of cleaning out drains. This weed was first noticed in the Hauraki Drainage District, but it is now getting widely distributed. It presents a green matted surface and as its name suggests, has some of the characteristics of the clover. But it is becoming such a hindrance to successful drainage in old drains that its presence is far from a pleasure to those interested in drainage operations.
