BOROUGH AND COUNTY

LOCAL BODY TROUBLES REGARDING ROADING AGREEMENT IMPROVING STANLEY ROAD Some months ago an agreement between the Te Aroha Borough Council and the Piako County Council in regard to improving a portion of Stanley road was entered into. At a special meeting of the Piako County Council Cr. Clark (member for the Waihou riding) reported on a consultation with the Works Committee of the Te Aroha Borough Coiincil relative to an agreement between the two bodies for scarifying, metalling and roiling of that portion of Stanley road within the borough and from the borough boundary to the railway line. He said that as this road was the main outlet for the Elstow ratepayers he was prepared to come to a fair arrangement with the borough. On the motion of Cr. Clark the following resolution was agreed upon: “That this Council agree to grade, scarify and roll Stanley road through the borough from the county boundary to the railway crossing, on the condition that the borough council place on this portion approximately 1000 yards of metal; the borough council to supply all workmen, except drivers for machinery, and do any ploughing necessary.” As considerable damage was done to this road by the carting of metal to Elstow it was also decided that the Elstow loan should contribute half and -that Waihou and Waitoa find the balance in the ratio of two to one respectively. This matter again has come into prominence. At the m'eeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday evening last the Mayor introduced it. Mr Coulter said he. thought that the Borough Council had not been treated as they ought. An agreement between the two local councils had been entered into last March but the work had been allowed to drift' on by the Piako County Council. That body did not carry out what it had arranged to do. He felt that they had not been treated fairly in the matter. He moved and it was agreed: “That a letter be written to the Piako County Council asking that the work on Stanley road as agreed be carried out forthwith.” Cr. Hamilton agreed that the treatment of the borough council in the matter was unfair. Cr. Bruce said that the Council had carried out their share of the work and the Piako County Council ought to carry out their share. Six months had passed while they were dallying over the work. Cr. Hedge concurred in the views expressed. The Mayor suggested that the riding member be seen in the matter before the Piako Council had its next meeting. Cr. Ritchie* expressed the opinion that the work was very urgent. He moved: “That the Work’s Committee meet the Chairman of the Piako County Council and the riding member with a view to having the work as agreed upon in Stanley road expedited.” i The Mayor seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. The Mayor further moved: “That in the event of the Piako County Council not doing the work as agreed upon that the work be carried out by the Borough Council at the expense of the Piako County Council.” Cr. Gordon seconded and the motion was carried unanimously.
