REST ROOM PROPOSAL

* / (To the Editor.) * Sir, — I again ask a small space in your columns in reply to Mr Strange’s letter, in which that gentleman adheres to the opinion (and to that he is quite welcome) that a Ladies’ Rest Room is not a suitable object to which the bequest of the late , Sir. W. Herries should be applied. ! Now, Sir, if Mr Strange takes only a slight interest in the affairs of Te Aroha in which he has so much at stake, he must have been acquainted with the fact that it was on the tapis some days before the public meeting that a rest room was one of the proposals to be submitted for discussion, and I wish to point out that the columns of your paper were equally open to hifn then as now to support or otherwise any object which might be brought forward. This he signally failed to do, and the resolution was passed after full consideration of those present, who are quite as capable’ in exercising as sound a judgment upon the question as Mr Strange. However, the matter is one entirely for the Public Trustee, who, I am sure, will give our Mayor a patient and courteous hearing when he voices the sentiments as expressed at the public meeting and not belike our friend Mr Strange, Who would promptly dismiss the matter as being unseemly and unworthy of attention, Your readers may not ihink it necessary for me to seriously notice / Mr Strange’s suggestion that I have paraphrased Webster according to my bias. I do not take Mr Strange’s remarks at their face value, as I regard them as one method to dispose not only of my contention, but also of Webster himself, who is an unrivalled authority on the word “amenities,” which is really the principle gt issue in our correspondence. I am inclined to think the burgesses of Te Aroha do not feel proud of Mr Strange’s attitude (at any rate not '~m this*instance), when instead of being up and doing he, contents himself by accepting the role’ of the arm-chair critic. Thanking ,you in anticipation. —I am, etc., J. MOTLEY.
